Nurse dresses NICU babies in costumes for Halloween

I figured what better theme than superheroes for those little preemies that fight so hard.

Nurse Katie Windsor didn’t have to look too far for inspiration when it came to finding Halloween costumes for the baby’s she looks after in her hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit.

SUPERHEROES!

“I figured what better theme than superheroes for those little preemies that fight so hard,” the North Carolina nurse told TODAY. “They really are superheroes, so it was perfect.”

Windsor, 35, who works at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory, said that dressing the tiny tots up provided a moment of levity for parents who might be disappointed at not being able to celebrate their baby’s first little milestones at home.

“The parents loved it,” Windsor said. “[It] really gave them something to smile about when they are in a sad time in their life, when they’re having to go home without their babies. I think it brought them a little bit of joy.”

Windsor spent a few days piecing together Superman, Batman and a host of other characters costumes, for a series of charming pictures.

Because some of the babies were on oxygen or hooked up to other equipment they were mostly dressed in their beds and parents of the bubs signed consent forms for the pictures to be taken – as well as being provided with copies to keep as mementos.

“It makes me feel good that people get to see these babies,” Windsor said. “I don’t think people think about the NICU unless they’ve had a baby that’s had to go there. I’m glad it’s bringing recognition to our NICU and what we do.”
