From shock to anxiety, confusion to joy – it’s a turning point in every young woman’s life that heralds in a new chapter.

And while most mums do their upmost to be supportive during this turbulent time, one parent from America went above and beyond for her daughter.

Shelly Lee, from Florida, was keen that her daughter Brooke never felt ashamed of what was happening to her body.

So when the 12-year-old got her first period this month, the mum decided to throw her a surprise party to celebrate.

Complete with a chocolate cake and a box of menstrual products, Shelly made sure her daughter knew this was an event worth shouting about.

Brooke’s party went viral when her cousin Autumn posted about it on twitter, with the teen later telling Buzzfeed “I’m glad everyone was able to see how supportive and amazing my family is.”

According to Brooke and her cousin, Shelly is nicknamed the “memory maker” because she always goes above and beyond for her family.

Case in point – Shelly says she chose chocolate cake because it contains serotonin, that will help Brooke through the highs and lows of menstruation.
