Mum suing child for gender reassignment surgery

Why wasn't I even notified?

A woman from Minnesota has announced she intends to sue her 17-year-old for seeking gender reassignment.

Anmarie Calgaro gave a press conference on Wednesday, where she expressed her outrage at her daughter being allowed to star the gender reassignment process without her knowledge.

“The news that county agencies and health service providers, the school and other county and state offices were completely bypassing me came as a total shock,” Calgaro said through tears. “Why wasn’t I even notified?”

The lawsuit challenges a state law that allows minors to access medical care without their parents knowledge if they are emancipated – i.e. living separately from their parents with responsibility over their own affairs.

“I’m also taking this action for the benefit of all parents and families, who may be facing the same violation of their rights—so that they and others in the future may be spared from the same tragic events,” said Anmarie.

Calgaro’s daughter has reportedly been receiving hormone therapy for around a year, but it is unlikely she will seek gender reassignment before the age of 18 – if she does at all.
