Remembering your mum on Mother’s Day doesn’t take much: flowers, a card and a nice box of chocolates usually do the trick, but not leaving shopping for her till the last moment, well that’s a whole other matter.
According to Countdown’s sales data, Kiwis aren’t that great at rewarding their mums on time when that second Sunday in May rolls around.
Turns out some of us are leaving our gift choices to the last minute, with the supermarket chain reporting 39 per cent of flower sales in the week of Mother’s Day occurring on the day itself.
While it might seem that buying your mum chocolates takes off some of the pressure, we’re also leaving that till the last minute too, with figures showing a quarter of those who shopped the week before Mother’s Day buying theirs the day before, with another 20 per cent waiting till the day itself.
That said sweet treats are generally popular purchases with the supermarket reporting tripling their boxed chocolate sales in the lead-up to the day.
Card buyers seem slightly more organised with only 15 per cent getting theirs on the day – although belated card sales did show an increase.
Of course you don’t have to go down the traditional route to make the day meaningful.
You can treat your mum by doing something as simple as making her favourite meal, or if you’re feeling really extravagant hit the shops with her and buy her an amazing new outfit.
Whatever you choose to do, it’s all about showing your mum how much you love her! And remember it’s Mother’s Day next Sunday.
