Kiwi mum Emma Croftwilson has shared the terrifying moment she realised she was pregnant – as she began to give birth at home, alone.

Describing the day as “probably the most chaotic yet most exciting day of my life,” Emma writes in a column for Stuff that she didn’t know she was pregnant till she saw her child’s head coming out of her body.

“My first reaction was to wrap her up in a towel…I checked her airway to make sure she was breathing, then cut the cord with a pair of kitchen scissors,” she writes.

Emma describes how she then text her mum, pleading with her to not be angry, and telling her what happened. After her mum arrived, the shocked new grandma helped hold the baby until her dad too arrived home.

At just 18-years-old, Emma was suddenly a new mum.

After the initial shock of the unexpected arrival, the family called an ambulance, who took the new mum and baby for checks in hospital.

Hannah-Marie Reira, who was born in February last year, is apparently as “happy and healthy as ever,” according to her loving mum.
