A young family from West Auckland have revealed their shock – after finding out they were expecting their second set of twins despite being on birth control.

Zoe and Junior Fuimaono welcomed their first set of twin baby boys in 2014 and could not have been more overjoyed to start a family together.

But when the couple decided they wanted to try a different kind of lifestyle over in Australia, they upped sticks and headed to Brisbane – where Junior’s sister lived – just before their twins’ second birthday.

“We were attracted by the beautiful weather and beaches, the laid back lifestyle and the fact we could buy a house straight away,” explains mum Zoe, 27, who previously worked as a flight attendant for Qantas.

“Plus Junior could get a transfer in the police force – and could make a lot more money in Australia than we ever could back in New Zealand.”

There was a little shock in store for the family though, as after selling all their worldly possessions, booking the flights and getting ready to leave New Zealand – Zoe discovered she was pregnant again.

“We thought it was a mistake as I was on the pill,” laughs Zoe. “I made Junior go out and get dozens of pregnancy tests to I could check.”

And Zoe says she and Junior, who both have a history of twins in their families, knew they were expecting another pair of bubs before they even had the scan.

“We couldn’t believe it. Junior couldn’t stop laughing after the scan and kept saying ‘what are the chances?’ He was pretty stoked with himself.”

Family and friends had varied reactions, ranging from “you’re so blessed,” to “rather you than me.”

“Friends kept asking if we were planning on buying a mini-van,” says Zoe.

But already set on moving to Australia, the family went through with the shift overseas. However almost as soon as they got there, things didn’t go to plan.

“Everything seemed to be extra difficult for us. It was almost like the universe was against us being there,” says Zoe.

“We loved the weather but almost instantly we knew it wasn’t the place for us.”

After four months across the pond, the couple decided the grass really wasn’t greener on the other side.

“We missed our loved ones, Junior realised how much he loved his job back home, and it dawned on us that what truly matters in life isn’t material possessions but raising our children with family and friends around them – in the beautiful country we call home.”

Now they’re back, Junior and Zoe say they have no immediate plans to have more kids, and once they welcome their second set of twins at the end of January, they’llll be very content with their family of six.

“Plus, if we ever did decide to have one more baby – we can pretty much guarantee it would be two,” jokes Zoe.
