How to make your own baby wipes

Create your own baby wipes for a soft touch.

In the old days, mothers would wash their babies in between baths with a muslin cloth and water. No need for baby wipes!

When I wrote my book Mother’s Little Helper, I discovered some brands that had the preservative iodopropynyl butylcarbamate (IBPC), which is banned for use on children under three. It is really easy to make your own wipes, so give it a go.

  • ½ cup water

  • 1 tbsp rose water

  • 1 tbsp witch hazel

Combine all the ingredients, then pour a little of the mixture into the bottom of a container with an airtight lid. Rip up a few small kitchen towels or Chux cloths, place them in the bottom of the container, and pour in a little more liquid. Continue layering until the container is filled up. For travel packs, you can pop a few into a sealable plastic bag.

  • Please buy your rosewater and witch hazel from health stores, and check that neither product contains parabens or preservatives.

  • Keep the baby wipe mix in the fridge to stop it going off in the warmer weather.
