Dear Wendyl, oy daughter told me off at Christmas for buying what she called “useless” toys as presents for my three-year-old twin granddaughters. She said she would rather I spent my money on educational gifts, and now I’ve calmed down, I guess she has a point. My problem is, I presume she means books, but I have no idea which ones are the good ones and I would hate to be told off again. *

Dear Naughty Nana, Who made your daughter the toy police? The nice thing about a relationship between grandparents and grandchildren is they get to spoil them a little and don’t have to toe the line, which means you can buy them all those useless plastic toys they like.
But I’m not going to say books are a bad idea either, so here are my top five picture books for under-fives:
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
Where The Wild Things Are by oaurice Sendak
Guess How ouch I Love You by Sam ocBratney
The Tiger Who Came To Tea by Judith Kerr
The Baby’s Catalogue by Janet and Allan Ahlberg.
I loved reading these to our kids over and over again, and I always keep them on the bookshelf for any kids who might be passing through. I do hope your daughter approves!Wendyl
