Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova said she’s “fortunate to be alive” after a knife attack in her own home this week.
The 26-year-old Czech national is undergoing surgery for severe lacerations to four of her fingers on her playing hand, caused by the knife attack.
Kvitova said she is shaken and has severe injuries, that may well endanger her tennis career.
The incident occurred at her house in Prostejov Czech Republic, on Tuesday.
Ranked 11th in the world, Petra has won an impressive 19 titles, including victories at Winbledon in 2011 and 2014.
Reports suggest that the star allowed someone posing as a utilities man into her apartment, and while defending herself sustained severe injuries to her hand.
In a statement, the sportswoman said:
“Thank you for all your heart-warming messages.
“As you may have already heard, today I was attacked in my apartment by an individual with a knife. In my attempt to defend myself, I was badly injured on my left hand.
“I am shaken, but fortunate to be alive. The injury is severe and I will need to see specialists, but if you know anything about me I am strong and I will fight this. Thank you all again for your love and support and now I would appreciate some privacy while I focus on my recovery.”
