The man in this photo, Liu Fenghe, 25, has spent most of the past eight months being praised as a hero in his native China.
When his partner Lin Yingying, 22, was admitted to hospital with brutal head injuries – he said from falling from the fifth storey of their apartment block – he publicly stood by her, paying more than $45,000 towards her medical treatment and pledging to care for her for the rest of her life.
“I want to take care of her for the rest of my life. Even if I have to push her around in a wheelchair, I would be happy,” he told reporters.
For the eight months she was in a coma, he held a near-constant vigil at her bedside, posting updates to social media, where thousands followed the progress of the apparently loving couple.
But then Lin woke up and what she had to say painted a very different picture. A terrified Lin told doctors her “devoted” boyfriend was the one responsible for her injuries, saying he beat her mercilessly with a rolling pin when she accidentally burnt some loaves of bread in the couple’s bakery.
Lin alleged Liu had been violent towards her many times. She has now been released from hospital into the care of her family.
Police are investigating.
