Parents urged to dress properly for school drop-off

Parents who do the school run in PJs have been blasted by a principal: "Have a wash and get dressed"

The Principal of a British high school has issued desperate plea to parents who wear pyjamas on the school run.

Kate Chisholm, head of Skerne Park Academy, Darlington says that she’d had enough. “It’s about time something was done,” she told the Sun.

In a letter to parents with children at the school, Chisholm wrote: “I have noticed there has been an increasing tendency for parents to escort children to and from school while still wearing their pyjamas and, on occasion, even slippers.

“Could I please ask that when you are escorting your children, you take the time to dress appropriately in day wear that is suitable for the weather conditions.

“We are trying to raise standards and get better outcomes for the children and we noticed a lot of the parents are turning up to school as well as meetings and assemblies wearing pyjamas, if we’re to raise standards it’s not too much to ask parents to have a wash and get dressed.

“I have had loads of support from the community and people saying it’s about time something was done. I have had far more positive responses than negative.

“If I get the parents on board then we often get the children too and in order to get the best chances for the children we have to raise the bar with the parents.”

One father in the community told the Sun that he is very pleased that Chisholm has taken action. “It started with the odd parent turning up in pyjamas and now I’d say there are about 10 on any given day.

“It’s more-or-less the same people who do it. They don’t do it every time but each day there are about 10 who don’t have clothes on,” he said.

He continues: “It’s ridiculous. I don’t know how it’s come to this, that people think it’s okay to nip out of the house in their nightwear. They’ll turn up wrapped in a duvet next. It is shameful.”

Phil and his partner Donna Harrison, have three children at the school, and says that they always get dressed for the school run.

He added: “We’ll have to see what happens now. I suspect there might be those who fight it and think that they should be able to wear what they like.

“But they also have to face the rest of us who know that they have had a telling off from the head. Maybe they might be embarrassed.

“We’ll have to see. I’m hoping it stops here.”
