Oscar Pistorius has given his first TV interview since he shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The Paralympian, who is facing over 15 years in prison for the murder, gave an intimate interview to Mark Williams-Thomas – an English investigative journalist best known for exposing Jimmy Saville’s crimes.

In the interview, that was conducted at his uncle’s home in Pretoria, Oscar sobbed as he recounted the moment he realised he’d killed his lover.

“I knew that she was dead. And I went down on my knees and pulled her onto me.

“I put her on the bathroom floor; and I pull the curtain…the towel down for her head.

“And I just see blood and it’s just blood everywhere…So much blood…and I don’t know what to do.”

The 29-year-old described the horrifying realisation that he had killed his partner, adding that his reality is now “worse than a nightmare.”

Pistorius openly admitted that he doesn’t want to go back to jail, telling his interviewer: “I don’t want to waste my life, sitting there.

“If I was afforded the opportunity for redemption, I would like to help the less fortunate, like I had in my past.

“I would like to believe that if Reeva could look down on me, that she would want me to live that life.”

The Steenkamp family, who recently gave a victim impact statement at Pistorius’s sentencing hearing, declined to be involved in the programme.

Many of Pistorius’s critics have lashed out at the athlete’s decision to give the interview, especially as his defence stated he was too traumatised to speak at his own sentencing hearing.

The South African will be sentenced in July.
