A man who ate over 40 knives has been saved by doctors who managed to remove the blades from his stomach.
The man, a police officer, was admitted to hospital in Amritsar, in India, after he started to experience stomach pains.
After his miraculous survival the man told The Times of India he began swallowing the blades after he developed an insatiable appetite for metal.
“I felt like eating knives and ate them,” he told The Times Of India.
While an X-ray before the surgery showed the knives doctors were still shocked at the task ahead.
A team of five operated on the man for five hours to carefully remove the fully ingested objects. “In my 20 years of practice, this is the most dreadful surgery I have ever seen or done,” said Dr. Jatinder Malhotra, managing director of The Corporate Hospital.
It is believed the man could be suffering from Pica, an eating disorder typically defined as the persistent ingestion of nonnutritive substances such as metal, cleaning products, furniture or even hair.
The man reportedly promised doctors he would stop eating knives.
