Fifty people have been killed in an Orlando nightclub, in the deadliest terror attack in America since 9/11.

The gunman, named by officials at Omar Mateen, opened fire on revellers at gay nightclub Pulse in the early hours of Sunday morning.

It has now been confirmed he killed 50, and injured over 53, in what’s being called the worst shooting in American history.

Those inside the club described a scene of pure panic as gunshots were heard over the music, before bodies started falling to the floor.

US president Obama has once again had to take to the stand to condemn the act, calling is “an act of terror and an act of hate.”

“We are united in grief, in outrage and resolve to defend our people,” he said.

A hostage situation unfolded in the club after Omar opened fire, with a SWAT team being sent in to rescue those inside. During this the assailant was shot dead.

Although Omar’s family told NBC news that the incident had nothing to do with religion, IS said via their Amaq news agency that an IS fighter had carried out the attack on the club.

Those attending the annual LA Pride parade on Sunday observed a moment of silence before the start of festivities, and there was an increased security presence at the event.
