Tracy Glover, 42, married partner John McKeowen on Saturday at their Thames home, The NZ Herald reports. But sadly just hours after the ceremony, John was already mourning his new wife.
The mum of three had been battling an aggressive form of lung cancer, which had spread to her hip, shoulder and liver, since November.
“We were absolute soulmates” said a grieving John, who has now been left in charge of the couple’s son, Keenan, who is less than a year old.
John proposed in Taranaki by scrawling ‘Will you marry me’ into the black sand, before taking a selfie with the etching and taking it back to his girlfriend. Sadly, Tracy was too ill to make it down to the beach in person.
Metal artist John said heartbreakingly: “I was building a casket and making a wedding ring at the same time, not knowing what she was going to use first.”
John added that the support his family have been receiving from the community has been overwhelming.
“The local café gave us food vouchers; the local garage gave us free warrants on the car. The pub gives me free beers…It’s just been like that. People turn up and knock on the door with a meal.”
Tracy will be laid to rest in Auckland this Thursday.
