Where are they now: facing pain

From health battles to missing persons, we update our biggest real-life stories of the year

Teenager Joanna James faced a difficult decision to end the misery of extreme period pain – get pregnant or face infertility for life.

Her severe dysmenorrhea – which is sometimes eased by pregnancy – caused terrible scarring, and each month it became less and less likely she could ever be a mum.

only 18, Joanna didn’t want to become a teen mum, despite the health benefits, and shared her fears with readers back in September.

But there’s been more bad news for the young Aucklander since the story appeared. She’s now bleeding internally between periods, causing damage to her other organs.

“The doctor said it’s most likely now that I will not be able to have any babies,” she says. “Using a surrogate mother may be the only possibility in the future.”

In the year ahead, Joanna is facing more surgery in an effort to ease her pain, which sometimes can only be helped by taking morphine.
