Angela Crosser took the plunge and chose a more uplifting career when she decided to swap bullets for bras.
After 19 years in the New Zealand Army, including stints in warzones like Afghanistan, the mother of three wanted to spend more time at home with the kids.
“In the army, I had the privilege of serving New Zealand and travelling around the world, but like most mums, there was the emotional pull of wanting to be available to my children while doing a good job at work,” says the former staff sergeant.
“I knew I wanted to be with my family more,” says Angela (38), who is mum to Kyle (10), Connor (7) and Jessica (2).
“I had missed my eldest son’s fifth birthday because I was in Afghanistan and I realised that once those special moments are gone, that’s it.”
Life changed for the Christchurch mum two years ago when she attended a mate’s bra party.
She was introduced to Intimo, a lingerie company with a bra-fitting service.”I immediately loved the concept and started hosting bra parties of my own, while still being in the army,” Angela explains.
“Initially it was a little distraction for me, a delayed ‘girlie girl’ stage in my life after working in a male-dominated world for so long.”
But last year Angela finally left the army to become a full-time bra-fitting consultant.”I went from a brotherhood to a sisterhood,” Angela laughs.
“I could see a viable way of being at home with my children, be my own boss, work when I wanted to and earn an income that paid the bills.”
She says it was a hard decision to move from the male-orientated world of the army to the underwear business, but she insists that her latest venture is just as important as her time in the military.
“I feel extremely privileged to provide such a personal and much-needed service to the women of Christchurch,” she says.
“Bras are an essential item that women need every day, they can transform them from feeling flat to looking fabulous through great shape and silhouette.
A good bra is uplifting and provides a sense of security in so many ways.”
