A couple whose wedding plans were put on hold after a shocking cancer diagnosis have been married in a ceremony a hospital.
When Destini Schafer started experiencing stomach pains that wouldn’t go away, she never imagined it would turn out to be stage 4 cancer.
Her dreams of a Jamaican wedding to her fiancée Brandon Thomas quickly seemed like they would never happen, as she started treatment in Springfield, Illinois.
But thanks to the quick work of nurse Ashley Shipley-Lovecamp, Destini and Brandon were able to have a wedding organised in just five short days –ensuring the severely ill Destini does not miss out on her big day.
Speaking of her devoted carer, Destini told ABC News: “She’s an amazing person, like a guardian angel.”
The couple married in the garden area of the hospital, surrounded by their friends, family and three children from their previous relationships.
Shipley-Lovekamp said: “I wanted Destini to be able to have a wedding because we didn’t know how much longer she was going to have. I wanted her to be able to be happy and focus on something other than her diagnosis.”
Meanwhile, Brandon has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for his new wife’s medical treatment.
“We’re just praying for the best,” he said of the future, which seems unclear for the couple.
