*Since our teenage children have left home, we are at a loss what to do when something goes wrong with our computer. Would you recommend dial-a-geek-type services or should we explore less formal arrangements, such as SeniorNet?*
If you bought your computer from a retailer, I would start by calling the store and asking if you can take your computer to them.
I bought a laptop from Harvey Norman and for years took it into the service department anytime something went wrong. They were helpful, usually fixed the problem and seldom charged. SeniorNet is outstanding, but it is more a learning centre than a resource for when your computer breaks down.
By all means join a branch and learn what to do when basic functions go wrong. I’m sure the experts on hand are happy to help members out with PC problems and they might know of the most reasonable local repairers.
Firms such as Geeks on Wheels have the expertise, but they’re not cheap. They charge around $115 an hour… with a minimum of an hour each visit. It costs more if you want same-day service or you live out of their local area. What you need is a student who, for pocket money, would sort out simple problems.
