The former Warriors star bravely spoke out about how he spent three weeks at a church-affiliated course ahead of his move across the Tasman, where he will make the switch to union for the Greater Sydney Rams from August, after learning the ropes with the city’s Southern Districts.

The 27-year-old newlywed and dad-of-one told how he made the decision to seek help after a plea from his 28-year-old wife, Pulse netballer Chelsea Locke (nee Pitman), whom he married in December: “The long distance had really put a strain on things,” he says in this week’s Woman’s Day.

“I was very lonely, being in my own little bubble away from Chelsea and the team. I was going through a really bad patch. I’d go down every two weeks which would make me feel good, but when I was alone, I’d be going out drinking…my head was all over the place. I’d promised her I’d ease up on partying when we got married, but I didn’t. ”

Kevin has suffered from depression since his early teens and told how only weeks ago, at the end of April, suicidal thoughts plagued him for a third time as he drove around Auckland late one night.

Despite acknowledging his ongoing struggle with depression, Kevin told how he is determined to change his life for the sake of his wife and Louie, his three and a half year old son from a previous relationship.

And despite telling how the Warriors will always be his team, he hasn’t ruled out a return to New Zealand in the future for a career in rugby union.

“If I enjoy playing, I wouldn’t mind coming back to New Zealand and playing for a Super 14 team. All Blacks is the ultimate goal. But with the amount of talent there is [in NZ], it’s not an easy task!”
