‘I was a Queen of Egypt’

Happily married photographer Sonia Bradford loves horses, lives in the Waikato town of Paeroa and enjoys painting – but that’s just one of her lives. The 68-year-old also believes she was a controversial Egyptian queen, a twin in ancient Greece, a healer in pioneering America accused of witchcraft, and a murdered Russian aristocrat.

These fascinating past lives first started revealing themselves one morning in 1992. As she was waking up from a deep sleep, Sonia heard a voice giving her a cryptic message that begged to be unravelled. Although Sonia didn’t know it at the time, the voices she began to hear regularly were to lead her on a journey of discovery, now detailed in her book, Nothing Causeless Comes.

As a believer in reincarnation, Sonia says past lives can hold the key to illnesses and phobias in this life. one example is her recollection of being an affluent Russian woman who was suffocated, which she believes has led to her own fear of being smothered.

on another occasion, she linked a skin complaint with a past life. “I had a rash around my neck and my wrists at one stage and I think that was related to being bound with cords in that previous life.”

She has also uncovered a past life as the ancient Egyptian Queen Tiye during her dreams, which she carefully documented and included in the book, along with paintings of her previous selves. As a twin herself to her sister Marcia, Sonia says there has been a recurrent theme of twins in her past lives – she believes she was Artemis, the sister to the Greek god Apollo, as well as having a twin when she was a healer in colonial America.

“I think my sister Marcia was also a close friend in Russia who survived the revolution,” Sonia says.

oost of Sonia’s memories of past lives have come as messages spoken to her during the transition from sleep to waking, called the ‘hypnogogic’ state. She says nobody else should try to interpret another person’s dream as it’s so intensely personal to the dreamer.

“only you know the details – only you have the memories imprinted in your DNA,” she says.

Sonia is publishing her own dreams of past lives in order to help others bring their own past lives to light.

“People have their own memories which can help them in this life. They can help to discover talents and patterns that might be repeating themselves, and there’s the connection to medical problems too,” she says. “Whatever talents you were given in a past life, you’ve still got them even if you don’t use them in this lifetime.”
