A woman living with incurable lung cancer has revealed how the disease has transformed her life for the better.

Sophie Sabbage, a British mum who was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in October 2014, writes that she has been on a “remarkable journey of healing and discovery,” since first receiving her diagnosis two years ago.

Sophie writes that after getting cancer she has experienced a kind of catharsis, stating: “I have unlocked huge amounts of grief since being diagnosed. I have found this deeply emotionally healing.”

As a believer in both traditional and alternative medicines, the mum of one claims that she has embraced pent up grief from throughout her life, and claims that this has helped her heal – and live far past the deadline of a few months she was originally given.

“If we don’t feel the sorrow then grief becomes a dark, heavy burden we carry around instead of a healing force,” writes Sophie.

“I am more open, loving and grateful for its [grief’s] presence in my life.”

Sophie added that being given her diagnosis showed her who her true friends were, and that they have formed “a village of support” to help her through her darkest days.

Sophie credits her positive cancer attitude to the fact that she has directed her treatment from the start, something that she finds incredibly “empowering.”

And two years on from her death sentence of a few months, Sophie feels she’s still thriving.

“I came close to dying at one point before bouncing back. It wasn’t all doom and gloom. There was much joy amidst the pain. But it’s up to those left behind to hold onto the good memories. You can do this. It’s an act of will and state of mind…Endings can be beautiful if we accept mortality instead of resisting it.”

Her advice to the rest of us? “Live life as if you might be taken out at any moment.”
