A five year old boy has had a lucky escape, after getting sucked into an underwater drain in a hot tub.

Sam Leathes was on holiday in South Africa with his parents when he was pulled into the drain, and had to be pulled unconscious from the water.

The little boy’s stomach had created a vacuum on the drain , and he was only released when his mother Lucinda pressed the off switch.

His 38-year-old mother, from London, said: “I knew they recommended only over 16s go in, but I was right next to Sam, I thought he was safe.

“I would not have thought of the danger of drains.”

Lucinda is now working with the Royal Life Saving Society to help prevent other accidents like these.

“I am so, so grateful that Sam is okay,” she said. “He has scars on his tummy, but thankfully didn’t realise the gravity of what had happened.”
