Donald Trump has today been voted President of the United States after a hard-fought race that pitted him against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

The Associated Press was one of the first to report that the Republican Party nominee won the election, making him the country’s 45th president. He is the first president without prior government or military experience, and the second without prior political experience.

Both CNN and NBC reported that Clinton called Trump to concede the race.

The American businessman, television producer and father-of-five announced his candidacy for president in June 2015 and quickly emerged as the front-runner for his party’s nomination.

In May 2016, his remaining Republican rivals suspended their campaigns, and in July he was formally nominated for president at the 2016 Republican National Convention.

The 70-year-old’s campaign and controversial statements received unprecedented media coverage and international attention throughout the lead up to the 2016 election, particularly after The Washington Post uncovered footage from 2005 showing him making lewd comments about women.

The scandal saw Trump issuing a formal apology for the video, saying, “anyone who knows me knows these words don’t reflect who I am. I said it, I was wrong and I apologise.”

His 2016 presidential campaign focused on domestic issues such as illegal immigration, offshoring of American jobs, the U.S. national debt, crime, and Islamic terrorism.

Taking to the stage after the election results were announced, Trump said it was time to “bind the wounds of division” in the country.

“I says it is time for us to come together as one united people. I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans, and this is so important for me,” he said.

“For those who have chosen not to support me… I’m reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so that we can work together to unify our great country.”
