Straighteners are all the rage right now, but it’s hard to know whether to buy cheaply and upgrade often, or splash out on the very best.
Here are our tips for buying. To see the results of our tests, visit consumer.org.nz
Key components and what to look for in a hair straightener:
- *
Plate size* *
Slim to medium plates are suitable for most hair types. Wider plates may speed up the styling process, but the straightener will be bulkier.
Control buttons
The position of some control buttons meant that our triallists could accidentally switch off the straightener during use. Before you purchase, check the on/off button isn’t where your fingers would usually hold the straightener.
Ready-to-use indicator
It’s handy when there’s a “beep” or flashing light to let you know when the straightener has reached the right temperature.
Adjustable settings
This is useful for people with fine or damaged hair, who want to use the straightener at a lower heat.
Auto switch
Never again will you have to wonder if you remembered to switch off the straightener once you’ve left the house. An auto switch means the heating elements turn off after a certain period of time.
A very handy safety feature, that also delivers peace of mind.
Accessories
Some straighteners come with a carry case, while others have a protective heat-resistant mat for resting the straightener while it’s in use.
Dual voltage
This allows you to use your straightener overseas, provided you have the correct adaptor plug.
