The start of the summer long weekends – it’s one of our favourite times of the year. Summer festivals, BBQs, swimming and beach cricket – it’s time to sit back and relax.
Whether your long weekend is imminent, or you’ve got a while to wait – here’s what to expect from the weather this weekend.
North Island
From the Northland down to Auckland, Saturday will be warm and sunny to start off with, with highs of 26 in Whangarei.
And our biggest city should bask in sunny weather for most of the day – good news for everyone kicking off the Anniversary weekend outdoors.
Likewise Hamilton, Rotorua, Tauranga and Taupo will all see blue skies and highs of 26 in the morning, maintaining consistent warm temperatures throughout the day.
Further south on the North Island, the weather will also be sunny and warm – with highs of 24 in Palmerston North, Napier and Masterton . Meanwhile New Plymouth, Wellington and Paraparaumu will be slightly cooler at 20, but still sunny and warm.
On Sunday, the North will remain warm and sunny, while Wellington can expect cloud cover throughout the day.
Gisborne is expected to reach a scorching 29 degrees on Sunday morning – so be sure to slip, slap, slop, and wrap.
For those parts of the country who have a holiday on Monday, the weather is looking mighty fine for most.
There will be mainly sunny weather across the North, with a few showers in Gisborne, the Waikato, and Wellington.
South Island
The South Island will be blessed with sunny weather on Saturday too, albeit slightly cooler than up in the North.
Blenheim will bask in temperatures of up to 23 degrees, while Nelson and Kaikoura will also have warm, sunny weather.
Slightly cooler and cloudier Greymouth and Hokitika will still get some sun throughout the day on Saturday.
There will be showers for Milford Sound on Saturday morning, with Dunein, Invercargill, Queenstown, Timaru and Christchurch enjoying sunny starts with patches of cloud.
On Sunday, Greymouth will draw the short straw when it comes to the rain, with Milford Sound also getting showers, and Dunedin too.
Nelson and Christchurch will still enjoy sunny weather with some cloud.
By Monday, the South Island will be mainly sunny with some cloudy spells in places.
