Emergency crews have successfully rescued around 20 passengers stranded atop a broken down rollercoaster at the Gold Coast’s Movie World.
As reported by the ABC, it is believed firefighters used a cherry picker to rescue four riders, while the remainder evacuated using a ladder platform assembled by emergency services.
“There are no injuries to any guests on board and we are in direct communication with the guests,” said a spokesperson.
A “mechanical issue with the chain” is said to be the cause of the breakdown at this stage. It is unclear whether the scorching heat played a role.
“Due to the time required to reset the mechanical issue, we have engaged the Queensland Fire Brigade to assist with the evacuation process.
“Our team and the fire brigade regularly train for this type of evacuation.”
Reports from 7 News are that emergency services were called to the Oxenford theme park around midday.
“We’ve been called to the scene for a vertical rescue,” a spokesperson for the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service told the ABC at the time.
“We are working with management on scene to access them.”
The technical glitch comes just months after four people were tragically killed at the hands of a malfunction at Dreamworld’s theme park, also located on the Gold Coast.
