Girl, 16, accused of throwing her newborn baby out a window

The girl, who asked for help on Facebook, will be charged as an adult, following the newborn's death.

Authorities believe 16-year-old Antonia Lopez of Omaha in the US went into labour last Friday, gave birth prematurely in her bedroom alone and then threw the newborn baby girl from the second floor of her apartment building.

The girl then told told her mother what had happened, media reports say. The mother found the baby in the grass outside, called 911 and gave the newborn CPR until paramedics arrived, police said.

The Daily Mail reports that a Facebook profile in Lopez’s name shows a status posted in the early hours of Friday which read “Who can do me a huge favor (sic) and has a car?” followed by three crying emojis.

A woman who said she was the teen’s aunt posted on the Facebook page Sunday, saying other members of the family were trying to organize a funeral for the newborn.

Police have told the local newspaper Omaha World-Herald that the baby was not stillborn, but had died by the time she was transported to the hospital. Paramedics said she was pronounced officially dead at the hospital.

Lopez has been charged with none count of child abuse resulting in death, which is a felony. She will also be charged as an adult.

The Daily Mail reports that it is unclear whether Lopez’s family knew she was pregnant.
