Oscar Pistorius’ sentence in jail has been increased to 13 years and 5 months.

The former Paralympic sprint runner, 31, was originally sentenced to 6 years in prison in July last year for killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in 2013.

However, many commentators described the 6 year sentence as too “lenient.”

Pistorius has claimed he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder.

Steenkamp was just 29 when she was killed.

High Court Judge Thokozile Masipa originally sentenced Pistorius to five years for manslaughter in 2014.

Pistorius served 10 months of the five-year sentence before being released and put under house arrest.

Reeva Steenkampa and Pistorius had only been dating for months before she was shot.

In June, 2016, Pistorius demonstrated to the court how he walks without his prosthetic legs in a bid to show how vulnerable he would be to an intruder.

A spokesman for Steenkamp’s family said the ruling “verified there was justice.”
