Why celebrities should stop boasting about having plastic surgery

Is it just us, or are the rich and famous sending conflicting messages?

In her latest interview with a women’s glossy, The Big Bang Theory actress Kaley Cuoco admitted to having several plastic surgery procedures to improve her appearance.

From the nose job she had in her youth, to having a breast augmentation and fillers in her neck – Kaley says “as much as you want to love your inner self…I’m sorry, you also want to look good”.

“Best thing I ever did,” Kaley says about her boob job, that she showed off in the recent issue of Women’s Health.

Of course, Kaley’s not alone. There’s a whole host of celebrities “coming clean” about their cosmetic procedures, from teenage Kylie Jenner’s lip fillers to Iggy Azealia’s boosted bust.

And while many have praised these celebrities for their honesty, is the message they’re sending really any better than those who hide the work they’ve had done?

Kaley Cuoco has been open about her plastic sugery past

It makes a mockery of the body positive messages these same women seem to promote, telling girls to ‘love themselves’ and ‘be happy in your own skin,’ while simultaneously conforming to a plastic ideal.

Are we missing something, or is the message here really, “you should be happy – but only once you’ve changed everything about your appearance that might possibly be quirky or different”?

That, despite what these ladies would like to think, seems to be the message they send into the world.

And in an age where your looks are your ‘brand,’ these women are simply fuelling the idea that the way you appear is the most important thing in life, not who or what you are.

Is it not worrying to think that thousands of little girls are growing up hearing these conflicting messages? Hearing on the one hand that you should love yourself as you are, but also that if you have a dodgy nose or a smaller chest, you should have them bashed in and reshaped through serious surgeries. Does anyone else find this a little bit boring and disingenuous?

There are many ways to be happy, and having your body cut, stuffed and reshaped should not be held up as one of them – especially by those with such power to influence.
