My sister had her engagement party recently and everyone had a good time, or so I thought. My other sister told me my engaged sister was “disappointed” I had turned up wearing jeans and a T-shirt rather than dressing up. It’s true, I was dressed casually, but we were at a bar I hadn’t heard of, and I thought it was more of a pub than a swanky, upmarket place. Anyway, now she’s not talking to me and the wedding plans are going on without me. Do I need to fix this?

Emma, by email

Dear Emma,

What do you plan to wear to the wedding? Because a lot rests on your answer. If you are genuinely sorry you failed to respect your sister’s dress code then apologise and move on. But if you think it’s nobody else’s business, leave it. Personally I’d concentrate on your relationship with your sister. If that means putting on a dress and playing nice, that’s what you should do.
