Dear Wendyl,
I recently celebrated my 50th birthday. Alone. None of my family or friends remembered and so I spent the day fuming and feeling sorry for myself. Then two days later my sister rang up and thought it was my birthday – on the wrong day! She felt really bad when I told her, but still no-one has done anything. How did I end up with such terrible people in my life?
No Birthday for Me,

Dear No Birthday for Me,
So you sat there all day and didn’t remind anyone, choosing instead to indulge in a 50th birthday treat of a totally self-indulgent navel-gazing pity party. Let me just explain that this was your choice, nobody else’s, so don’t go blaming others for the fact that you had a bad day. People are busy, they forget, but they are always happy to be reminded and I’m sure would have loved to make you feel special. But they’re not mind readers so next year why not tell them all it’s your birthday and see how much better you feel.
