Time to think ahead to the summer months and create your own monarch butterfly garden.
Last year, numbers of the beautiful creatures were down, so the more we can do to help them through breeding stages and feed them when they’re adults, the better their population! Plan a part of your garden where you can grow a lot of swan plants – a species of milkweed, which is the food source of the monarch.
Try and plant at least 10 – when a chrysalis hatches, the caterpillar will feed on the plant, so you need plenty. Also, set aside a flower garden with nectar-giving flowers for the adult butterflies. Good plants are chrysanthemum, calendula (marigold), hebe, sunflower, wallflower, zinnia, snapdragon and salvia.
