Now is the time to think about planting some potatoes, so you can have freshly dug baby spuds on the table in time for Christmas. I’ve successfully grown them in big tubs before, or you can plant them in your garden.
The secret is to choose a variety that grows best in your area, so get down to your local garden centre and ask which ones do well locally.
And don’t be tempted to use old potatoes which have sprouted in your bin. The Certified Seed variety from the garden centre won’t carry disease.
Make sure you sprout them first by leaving in a warm, dry and airy place, until you have shoots about 3 to 4cm long.
Layer the soil with hay to keep it dry, as spuds hate wet feet.
The soil needs to be free-draining and have plenty of compost added, then you are good to go.
