Make your own laundry powder

I came up with this recipe years ago, and it works just as well as any laundry powder. It’s a bit like clay to use, but is so easy to make, saves you loads of money and cleans clothes well.

  • 1 cup washing soda

  • 1 cup baking soda

  • 60ml liquid castile soap (I use Dr Bronner’s, or you could try dishwashing detergent for a less green option)

  • 2ml lavender essential oil

Put the washing and baking soda in a food processor and process to combine. Slowly drizzle in the liquid castile soap while the processor is still running to create a white powder. Then add the lavender oil and continue to process until you have something resembling a clay. Keep it in an airtight container and use 1 tbsp for an average load, double if you are washing a big load.

*If you want a powder, use soda ash (the powdered version of washing soda) instead. It can be hard to find, but I do stock it on my website.
