A simple group of souvenir postcards tacked to the wall can be truly sensational, yet costs next to nothing. It’s all about having confidence in your skills as a decorator. These basic tricks are often the best.

**A group of framed prints can look quite spectacular. Print some favourite photos in black and white. Or do as I do sometimes and find a nice gardening or art book at the local charity shop and cut out the gorgeous illustrations.

**In sunny spots, use nature’s treasures to jazz up a dull wall. Although these indoor plants will need lots of water, you can reduce potential leaking by sealing their terracotta pots. Better still, have a plastic pot within the terracotta one, which makes it easy to lift your plants out and give them a drink.

**Still simple – but really cute – are these cutout butterfly shapes, which have been painted and attached to a wall. Try something similar with a rainbow or bird theme. Look online for templates to print and enlarge.

**You can’t beat a mirror for adding glamour – the bigger the better. Place it near a window to catch the light and arrange your accessories to show their reflections to best advantage. Mirrors are also fantastic for adding space and light – try putting one in a smaller room to give it a more spacious feeling.
