How to: Make apple and pear crumble

Warm up a cold day with this spiced crumble from Christina Leon of healthy food blog Reveal Yourself.

When it’s cold and raining outside I love nothing more than getting into the kitchen and whipping up this apple and pear crumble. There is nothing quite like the smell of baked crumble as it comes out of the oven to make you feel all toasty and warm inside.

This gluten-free dessert is packed full of healthy, nutritious ingredients and it’s so easy to make; once the apples and pears are peeled and sliced, the rest can be thrown together in less than five minutes.

You can substitute the apples and pears with alternative fruits throughout the year when they are in season. I love to serve this version in the Leon household – it’s such a crowd-pleaser when guests come over. Any leftovers (a rare occurrence!) can be served cold the next day with a dollop of natural yoghurt as a delicious breakfast treat.

This is one of the easiest crumbles you will ever make and I’m sure it will become a firm favourite in your house, too.

Apple and pear crumble

Apple and Pear Filling

3 apples

3 pears

2 tbsp coconut sugar

1 tsp cinnamon

Crumble

1 cup almond meal

1 cup sliced almonds

1 cup coconut flakes

1 tbsp coconut sugar

1 tsp cinnamon

½ cup extra virgin coconut oil,

plus extra for greasing

1. Preheat oven to 160°C.

2. Grease a baking dish with coconut oil.

3. Peel and core the apples and pears, then thinly slice. Place a layer of apple slices in a circular pattern in the baking dish, then add a layer of pears, alternating until all the slices are layered.

4. In a small bowl, mix together the coconut sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over the top of the fruit.

5. In a large bowl, combine the almond meal, sliced almonds, coconut flakes, coconut sugar and cinnamon. Add the coconut oil and, using your hands, work the coconut oil through the dry mixture to create a crumble consistency.

6. Evenly spread the crumble mixture over the top of the sliced apples and pears.

7. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 40 minutes until the crumble is golden and the apples and pears are cooked to desired softness. (If the crumble is getting too brown, cover with a layer of tin foil and continue baking until it’s ready.)

8. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before spooning out into serving dishes. Serve with organic fresh cream, natural yoghurt or vanilla ice cream.
