Homemade woolen wash

Make up this soap jelly, and keep it handy for washing any wool items.

In Nana’s day, baby blankets were all made using natural fibres, such as wool and cotton. These are still best, because they breathe and stop your baby overheating. But, as we oldies know, wool blankets take looking after. They are naturally repellent to liquids, so if something spills on it, a quick flick and a wipe will do. But if you do have to wash them – and I recommend you do if they are brand new – you need to be very gentle. Make up this soap jelly and keep it handy for washing any wool items. Handwash is ideal, but if you have a wool setting on your machine, that would also be okay.

WOOLEN WASH

  • 250g Lux flakes

  • 1L boiling water

Scatter the flakes over the boiling water in a pot while stirring to prevent lumps. Simmer on the stove until the flakes have dissolved. When it is cold, it will form a hard, white jelly. Store in an old ice-cream container with a lid. For each 2L of lukewarm water, dissolve 1 tbsp of jelly and mix well before adding clothing.

**If you do get lumps, don’t worry – just leave them in the jelly to set.*
