Homemade recipe: Air freshener

Natures fresh scent.

In Nana’s day, there was no pressure to make sure our houses smelled like fresh alpine meadows or acres of lavender. It has only been in recent years that we have started introducing cans of air freshener into our homes – and now automatic dispensers. The problem is commercial products all use an artificial fragrance – even though the can may feature pretty pictures. Most of these fragrances contain phthalates, which can cause hormonal abnormalities, and are classified as a hormone disrupter.

I don’t think it’s a great idea to have these in the home, and certainly not being sprayed at you every five minutes or when you walk into a room.

Instead of introducing chemicals, why not do what Nana used to do and open up your windows? In the old days, doors and windows were opened up every morning to air out the home, all the bedding was hung up, and the outdoors were regarded as healthy. If you really must perfume the air in your house, then make sure to use an oil diffuser with natural essential oils (not fragrance), or try this air-freshener spray in your bathroom:

  • 10 drops lavender essential oil

  • 5 drops bergamot essential oil

  • 5 drops clove essential oil

  • 2 drops peppermint essential oil

  • ½ cup vodka or gin

  • ½ cup water

1 Combine in a spray bottle and give it a shake. Spray around as frequently as you like, avoiding the eyes.
