Homegrown herbs

Homegrown herbs are great for beginner gardeners.

Herbs love summer, because for most of them, it’s a reminder of where they grow best – the Mediterranean.

It is really easy to grow some simple herbs in a potager garden close to your kitchen, so you can nip out with the scissors and add some zing to your cooking.

Good, hardy herbs for beginner gardeners are sage, thyme, marjoram, rosemary, parsley, chives and mint. Buy from your garden centre and bundle together in a pot or corner of your garden, or give them their own pot each.

Mint should definitely be grown in a pot – if it is let loose in your garden, it will take over.

Make sure your herbs are in a very sunny spot, and don’t water them too much in the summer, as they love the chance to get really hot and dry.
