Controlling weeds

Geeting the whole family involved in an outdoor project is great fun.

The middle of winter is a good time to take care of weeds.

Their growth is quite slow during colder months, and there’s not much around for them to hide amongst – so get cracking before the warmer weather brings on flowering and they spread.

I spend the weekend digging out oxalis and chickweed, and trimming onion flowers at the base. If you do this thoroughly, the bulbs starve and die. Also, instead of putting weeds on the compost, I put them in a bucket of water where they’ll rot. This will give me some great natural fertiliser for my spring seedlings.
