We always long for what we don’t have, and for every person with straight hair who’s used perms, tongs or curlers to try to achieve body and fullness, there’s a curly headed friend or sister longing to keep her unruly hair under control. Here we have some simple tips to keep curly hair in good shape.

  • Use products appropriate for your hair. It might seem obvious, but finding the right serum or cream greatly reduces the amount of time you’ll spend getting ready. Start with a moisturising shampoo and conditioner, especially designed for curly or frizzy hair. Regularly applying hair treatments, and go for lightweight, non-greasy smoothy creams and sprays just before you leave the house.

  • Your hair will naturally get frizzy as it goes from wet to dry. To minimise this, do not rub your hair dry with a towel. Instead gently squeeze till semi-dry, then blowdry after applying product. Don’t wash your hair everyday, as this will strip the hair of moisture and contribute to frizziness.

  • Blowdry your hair with a diffuser – this attachment distributes air evenly, so it will enhance your curls while preventing the ‘just blowdried’ flyaways.

  • Curly hair is at the mercy of the weather – unfortunately when humidity strikes, sometimes the only option is to pop on a hat or head scarf. Alternatively, use a silicone based sealing spray to create a barrier between hair and moisture in the air.
