Dyed in the wool

Hi Wendyl, I read an article on you in a magazine and it seems you may be able to assist me. My daughter has spilt a few spots of hair dye on my carpet. Have you any tips on getting it out? We are renting and the carpets are a light grey and still new. Any help would be appreciated. Charmaine, email

Dear Charmaine,Dear, oh dear. This is a real toughie and I’m hard-pressed to find a natural cleaning solution for something as toxic as hair dye. You could try neat white vinegar or white spirits. other, more radical, methods include spraying it with hairspray then dabbing with cold water, nail-polish remover or hydrogen peroxide. Failing all those, you might be best to cut it out and patch it with a piece of carpet in a cupboard or a corner where your guests and landlord won’t notice.

Good luck, and if any Agony Aunt helpers have helpful suggestions, I’ll be sure to publish them.

Hi Wendyl, I hope this tip helps Charmaine, who had hair-dye stains on her carpet. I’ve had good results on old, dark coffee spots, as well as dried blood, with Woolclean’s “oagic” cloths.

These cost $3 each from my local Carpet Court retailer and are also marketed by Wools of New Zealand, Private Bag 4749, Christchurch. Regards, Terry
