Dear Wendyl,I have a four-year-old cat who has suddenly started urinating inside and refusing to leave the house. She’s driving me mad and my house is starting to smell. The vet says to give her a litter tray but that seems to be a very temporary solution, and besides, I thought litter trays were only for kittens. Any ideas about what I can do? Cat Lover, Wanganui

Dear Cat Lover, Your cat has obviously had a fright outside and therefore doesn’t want to be there. So you can either do litterboxes for the rest of your life or you can get hard and shut it out for a week. Remember when we were kids and there was no such thing as a cat door, our pets lived outside most of the time? as long as you remember to feed your cat, it will do it no harm and it will reconnect with its basic instinct to use the garden as its toilet. Also, a good tip for any areas in your house where your cat likes to urinate is to sprinkle with orange oil or scatter orange peel. Cats hate it.
