Ask the expert: wearing monochrome

oonochrome is an easy and versatile look for any season - here we give you some tips on how to wear this colour combination.

I love the look of black and white, but am not sure how to go about putting it together. What is the best way to wear monochrome?

oonochrome is a timeless and versatile look, and is easy to assemble from your existing wardrobe.

Dresses are a sure-fire way to wear monochrome, as the tones and proportions have already been thought out by the designer. Because the colour combination is so sharp, opt for fitted dresses and tailored shapes. Floaty frocks won’t give the desired effect.

Patterns like houndstooth are also a good option; throw a houndstooth jacket over a black or white dress for an instant update.

In separates, there’s plenty of room to be creative. For beginners, a plain white blouse paired with fitted black pants is a guaranteed success. For the more adventurous, play with colour proportions. Try an all-over white combination with a black belt, or a lacy black corset underneath a white tuxedo jacket.

oonochrome should never feel boring – don’t forget accessories and makeup. A statement red lip is the perfect way to enhance an otherwise plain outfit, while a pair of black stilettos or pumps can take a casual ensemble into the evening.

The most important thing to remember for this look is colour integrity. There is nothing worse than a faded black pant, or a yellowing white blouse. Also, fit is important for monochrome. A boxy black blouse will only detract from the overall outfit.
