While we expect some places to be filled with bacteria and germs (cue toilet seats, door handles etc), some of the most germ ridden areas can be found in the most surprising locations.

New research has found that the petrol pump handle is actually 11,000 times more germ-ridden than the toilet seat, due to the number of times people interact with it.

Busbud.com found that on average there were over 2 million colony forming units (also known as visible bacteria) per square inch.

Handbags, in comparison, have 9.7, and money just 5.2.

Time to get the hand sanitizer out after visiting the gas station.
