The healthy back to school guide

Osteopath and naturopath Dr Bo Hendgen guides us through the best essential oils to give kids a healthy start to the new school year.
Help your kids get back into the swing of school with essential oils.

As the summer holidays draw to a close and the time comes to kit out the kids for the new school year, think ahead with a few choice essential oils to ensure they get the best possible start.

What to use: Pure and organic rosemary, lavender true, sandalwood, bergamot and lemon essential oils, plus golden jojoba oil.

Morning madness:

After lazy summer days, who can blame kids for dragging their heels? Don’t wear yourself out nagging when a few drops of essential oils will improve kids’ energy and balance.

Changing night habits:

Help improve evening relaxation with one drop of lavender true to pulse points, or five to 10 drops in the bath.

Grumpy, sluggish mornings:

A drop each of lemon and rosemary essential oils on a soapy loofah will liven up the morning shower.

Back to school nerves:

Help kids feel relaxed and confident with a drop of sandalwood to pulse points (girls might prefer lavender true) or make a ‘don’t sweat it’ confidence-boosting deodorant with three drops of bergamot and two drops lemon in a teaspoon of organic jojoba oil.

Terrible tangles:

Add a drop of rosemary to a little organic jojoba oil and work it through knotty hair with your fingertips. This will make brushing smoother and add help to repair sun-damaged hair.

Great expectations:

Even the brightest kids can have trouble getting their heads into gear and adjusting to the new daily routine. Cut them some slack and sneak them some extra brain power.

Concentration:

Diffuse two drops each of bergamot and rosemary and one drop of lemon to create an atmosphere of calm for study time.

Memory recall:

Blend a drop each of lemon, rosemary and bergamot and apply to kids’ collars before tests or presentations. The scent associated with study time will help the mind access the information it needs.

Restoration and calm:

Diffuse five to 10 drops of sandalwood essential oil during quieter moments to help the mind find peace and the nerves find gentle equilibrium.

Special protection:

Improve your kids’ odds to stay fit and healthy with a natural shield against the dreaded school germ pool.

Protect against germs:

Let their teacher know you can inhibit the spread of coughs and colds by diffusing three drops of lavender and two drops of bergamot in communal indoor spaces, or use a professional blend such as Child Immune Plus by Absolute Essential.

Fortify immune protection:

Lemon in the water bottle (one drop per litre) will boost immune systems. Three drops of lavender true in a teaspoon of jojoba oil can be massaged into the chest, back and neck to gently aid healthy breathing and strengthen the body’s defences.

Natural purification:

When you wash out their lunch box and water bottle each night, add 10 drops of lemon essential oil to your rinse water for a child-safe, anti-germ clean.
