Superfoods: healthy or hype?

Superfoods have been dubbed as the health-boosting, nutrient-packed foods that contain high levels of much-needed vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

But are they all they’re cracked up to be?

We go digging to find out.

Teff

Teff

This gluten-free Ethiopian grain is a great source of iron, fibre and calcium. Cook it like rice, or use the flour alternative in baking.

Verdict: Healthy

Kefir

Similar to drinking-style yoghurt, kefir is full of nutrients and probiotics which improve your digestion and immunity. It is high in calcium and protein, so it gets the thumbs up from us.

Verdict: Healthy

Maple water

It was claimed to be the new health drink of 2016, but there’s little research to back up that this drink is actually good for you. High in sugar, with little nutrients, it doesn’t make the cut. Stick to healthier alternatives like coconut water, or plain H20.

Verdict: Hype

Banana flour

Another wheat alternative for those who follow a gluten-free diet, banana flour is high in potassium and is a healthier way to satisfy your carb cravings. It contains resistant starch which works to control your blood sugar levels and keep you fuller for longer.

Verdict: Healthy
