Kerre McIvor’s big change: ‘I was fat and unhealthy’

The popular radio broadcaster kickstarted her life after getting married.

Kerre McIvor with Dr Michael Mosley.

Kerre McIvor says Dr Michael Mosley’s 5:2 diet changed her life.

When Dr Mosley visited New Zealand recently to promote his new book The 8 Week Blood Sugar Diet, which claims to help people prevent and even reverse diabetes, she was ecstatic to facilitate his public appearance.

“His science had worked for me, how wonderful if it could help other people!” said the radio broadcaster.

Kerre has had great success with Dr Mosley’s 5:2 diet since 2012 – when she was struggling to shift the weight she’d gained on her 1.57m frame.

“At the time of my marriage, I was a 36FF,” she says of her bust size. “I could have used one of my bras as a marquee for the guests. I must be the only bride in the world to have put ON weight before her wedding. I had a beautiful wedding day. I loved every second of it … but post-wedding, I realised that things had to change because not only was I fat but I was unhealthy.”

The Mum-of-one knew how difficult the process would be because she’d done it before but she summoned the energy and got a trainer on board. Known for her determination, Kerre lost 6kgs relatively quickly, but plateaued at 75kgs.

“That was when I decided to try the 5:2 Diet, also known as intermittent fasting, made popular by Dr Michael Mosley and Mimi Spencer, who wrote the book The Fast Diet. What it involves is five days of normal calorie intake, then two non-consecutive days of eating 500 calories (600 if you’re a bloke).”

Kerre lost 3kg in the first week.

“It came off my belly and boobs. Then another 3kg came off and I was ecstatic. Eighteen months after beginning the 5:2 way of eating, the 16kg I lost has stayed off, despite many, many slip-ups.”

To read about Kerre’s tips for tackling on the 5:2 diet, recipes for the challenge, and insights from her meeting with Dr Mosley see the May edition of The Australian Women’s Weekly, out now.
