Can yoga make you a better mum?

The perfect excuse for some you-time.

Elena Brower is one of several international yoga stars coming to New Zealand as part of the Great Lake Taupo Wanderlust event in February.

She tells NEXT how yoga has helped her through addiction and perimenopause and to become a better mum.

What does yoga have to offer women in their 40s and 50s who haven’t tried it before?

Yoga offers all of us a new connection to our bodies, each time we practise. It helps me feel centred in myself, so I can more readily locate my stability and my capacity – in every relationship and project of my life.

How can yoga and the philosophy behind it make you a better mother or partner?

Yoga and meditation help me be more patient, more loving, more present for my family. Whether it’s my partner or my child, when I’m practising consistently I’m there for them, thinking creatively, helping to support them, which inspires them to support me.

How has yoga helped you deal with life issues?

The reason for my addictions was I couldn’t just be alone with myself. Yoga has taught me, layer by layer, that I’m most efficient in my life when I can have time alone breathing, listening. And yes, it helps with perimenopause… I’m living proof.
